Copper Pilot – Beat Motel interview

copper pilot interview

When an Ipswich band apparently appears from nowhere and does they’re first few home shows on the tail end of a meaty UK tour then it’s just the kinda thing to get our nose twitching at Beat Motel, but then that might be more to do with the dust bunnies caused by our cats here at Beat Motel HQ…

So, as is law in Zineland, who are you and why?

We’re CopperPilot, a four-piece band from Ipswich.

You seem to have appeared from nowhere, are you a new band or does this illusion of sudden appearance bely years of slogging out on the road?

We’ve been together for just over a year now so I suppose we’re reasonably new yeah. We’ve got all that slogging it out on the road to look forward to this summer with a fair bit of touring coming up.

So have any of you been in any bands we may have heard of before?

Yeh all 4 of us were in local band No Routine. So the 4 of us have been playing music together for the past 4 or 5 years and this has made writing new material and starting a fresh new band a lot easier, which I guess may add to the fact that CopperPilot seem to have appeared out of the blue.

How about other Ipswich bands?

Me and James (drums) are also in Ipswich band “After The Circus”, and Samuel (bass) has just started a new band called “Tracksuit”.

You also seem to be very busy with touring and gigging in general, how easy have you found it getting gigs and getting around?

Yeh we went away on our first tour early this year and had an awesome time. We like to keep busy and play as many shows as we can cos I think it’s still the best way to get your music out there. We’ve found it reasonably easy booking shows to be honest, mainly because we were lucky enough to land ourselves with a management deal a few months ago and our manager is a really hard working guy who does loads for us. Getting around between the shows can be a pain in the arse though. Our van isn’t big enough for all the gear as well as us, so we have to take 2 vehicles everywhere we go!

At what point would you consider Copper Pilot a success?

I guess we’ve already had a fair bit of success on a personal level, in that we’ve written a set of songs we all love and really enjoy playing. But I’d be lying if I said we weren’t hoping to make a living out of playing music someday.

How shite are these questions?

Haha, not as shite as our answers, but then this is our first interview and you’ve been doing it for a while now!

It doesn’t mean I’ve got any better at it!  Cheers for your time you lot, keep on tearing up the road!
