Ipswich Music Day happens the same weekend ever year in, yup, you guessed it – Ipswich! This is the largest free one day music festival in the UK. In this episode of the Beat Motel Podcast Andrew takes us on a journey through Ipswich Music Day (known locally as ‘music in the park’ as it returns to Christchurch park.

Ipswich Music Day has a great repuptation for having ‘something for everyone’. There are no less than six stages spread throughout the park they’re possibly right. No extreme or experimental music is included, which is disappointing but understandable. This brilliant celebration of music culture needs to appeal to kids, teenagers, the elderly and everyone inbetween.

Ipswich Music day is organised by Ipswich Borough Council and is a huge event focussing on music culture and local art. BBC Radio Suffolk also have a big presence, along with many other local arts and culture focusssed organisations.

In addition to the six stages of music there are fairground rides for children (and big kids), a remarkable amount of food stalls and some stalls selling plastic junk.

If you don’t like music, you might still find something you like here. But if you hate music, you probably wouldn’t be on a music podcast website.

This episode is a report more than a review, and as with all our live reviews we’ve made an effort to capture the sounds and vibe of the event. Ipswich Music day is a billion miles away from the carefully sculped genius of the Brighten the Corners music festival, but as ‘something to do’ it’s one of our favourite music-related events in Ipswich each year.

Bands mentioned in this episode:

  • The Interesting Times Gang
  • Myopia
  • Planet Fatale
  • Moon Street
  • Polly Haynes
  • Arms to Oblivion
