Pointless collaborations in music

January 20, 2025 by Andrew Culture

Last Updated on January 20, 2025

S01 E114

Andrew Culture teams up with Dr. Sam to unpack the most baffling, eyebrow-raising, and just plain pointless musical collaborations ever inflicted on humanity. From Elton John’s karaoke shenanigans with Orville Peck to the baffling Lou Reed and Metallica mash-up that should have stayed a rumor, this episode is a glorious deep dive into the “why even bother?” of music history.

Along the way, Andrew mourns the repetitive sound of butter dishes, Dr. Sam defends Franz Ferdinand (but not their Doppler obsession), and both hosts gleefully alienate entire fan bases. You’ll hear mentions of singing potatoes, Christian vulvas (don’t Google that), and the painful truth about Guinness.

Whether it’s Dropkick Murphys leaning too hard into Irish clichés or Scott Walker doing… whatever that was with Sunn O))), Andrew and Sam leave no collaboration unmocked. And for those brave enough to listen, there’s even a side rant on why people clapping at gigs should be outlawed.

Highlights:

  • Elton John covering his own song with Orville Peck. Why?!
  • Lou Reed and Metallica’s “Lulu”—the art rock album no one asked for.
  • The Dropkick Murphys, Shane MacGowan, and the world’s most tragic enablers.
  • Scott Walker and Sunn O))), or: how many amps does it take to ruin a song?
  • Musical side hustles, singing raisins, and why plastic picnic tables are the true MVPs of the noise scene.

Tune in if you’re not afraid to laugh at (and love) the absurdity of music.
